Discover My Journey So Far

Professional Journey

Over the past 15 years, I have held various roles in childcare, including babysitting, nursery work, being a registered childminder, and working as a Nanny for individual families. My journey in childcare began after leaving college. Although I initially pursued qualifications in science, I couldn’t see a clear career path in that field. I have always loved working with children, even doing my high school work experience in a school setting. It truly feels like my calling.

Passion for Outdoor Education

My passion for outdoor education began during my time working in traditional childcare settings. I noticed a significant lack of connection to the natural world in these environments. When children were given the opportunity to play and explore outside, I observed remarkable differences in their behavior. Outdoors they seemed to regulate their emotions better, build their self-esteem and confidence, and engage in fantastic learning opportunities that challenged them in ways indoor spaces couldn’t.

My love for nature started in my own childhood. My best memories involve time spent outdoors—going to the beach, camping with my family, walking the dog, and building dens in the woods with friends. These experiences shaped my appreciation for the natural world and really highlighted the importance of these connections.

My Vision

Hazelwood Forest school aims to positively impact children and families by offering opportunities to learn new skills and allow children to build lasting friendships and a deep connection with nature. I feel strongly that all children should have access to nature’s wonderful benefits.

My Philosophy

I believe in all children’s right to play, their right to autonomy, their right to experience risk and I believe in giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant wonder of the natural world.

At Hazelwood Forest School, I am dedicated to fostering these experiences and providing a nurturing environment where children can thrive and build their confidence in the great outdoors.

Founding Hazelwood Forest School

I founded Hazelwood Forest School because I believe that children are not getting enough opportunities to connect with nature. This connection is crucial for their development, offering them the chance to understand the world around them. I also noticed a particular lack of outdoor opportunities for older children, especially those of high school age. I wanted to create a space where all children could have these vital experiences.
